3 Tell-Tale Signs of a Toxic Work Environment!

Nov 2022

Shoshanna Davis

Did you know that according to research published in the MIT Sloan Management Review, toxic work culture is THE number one reason why people leave their jobs?

Whether you’re at the start of your career, somewhere in the middle or about to finish, you deserve to work in an environment where you feel heard, seen, respected and appreciated.

Here's 3 redder than red flags to look out for in your place of work..

Little opportunity for growth within the company

A good manager will want to see you progress within your role. They should support you, encourage you, and motivate you to want to achieve your very best-and, most importantly, provide you with tangible opportunities to do this. If you feel stagnant with your current responsibilities, it could be a sign you're being denied the progression you deserve.

Your personal wellbeing is dismissed and not taken seriously

Are you made to feel guilty when you take time off work due to illness or simply just to take a break? Is there open and non-judgemental conversation surrounding “the taboo” aspects of wellbeing: from mental health to periods? Are there specific policies and activations in place to provide genuine support and advice for employees? Caring about employees wellbeing is more than just a free gym membership or monthly yoga classes.

Lack of inclusivity and diversity that pertains to inequality and micro-agressions in the workplace
How many non-white employees do you see/know within the company? Is the discussion of LGBT+ issues and rights only present during pride month, or is the only acknowledgement a PR statement and rainbow company logo? Do you notice subtle interactions or behaviours that communicate a negative bias between marginalised groups (also known as micro-aggressions)?

Please remember that no salary, title, brand or "office perk" is worth sacrificing your mental, physical or emotional health and well-being.

If you feel it's time to move on to greener ventures, remember as you close one door, another will always open, and sometimes the grass really is greener on the other side!

Talk soon, and remember, my DM's are always open!
